Fiddler on the Roof, once the longest-running musical in Broadway history, is an all-time classic packed with comedy, pathos, great characters, and classic songs, including “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “To Life,” “Miracle of Miracles,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” and many more.
Based on Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye stories, Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of a Jewish family in tsarist Russia around the turn of the twentieth century. The plot centers around the marriage prospects of Tevye the milkman’s three eldest daughters and is set against the looming threat of religious persecution.
The show’s themes, which are universal and seem to become more relevant with each passing year, include the tensions between tradition and progress, isolation and assimilation, and, most acutely, between parents’ love for their children and their need to let them go, to allow them to grow up and live their own lives and make their own decisions.
Even if you’ve seen Fiddler on the Roof before, it will be worth checking out MHS’s production. Last year’s production of Les Misérables earned Bergen PAC High School Musical awards for Outstanding Overall Musical, Best Ensemble, Best Musical Direction, and the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award for Outstanding Orchestra. Leading this year’s Fiddler cast, as Tevye, in his final MHS production, is senior Jackson Miller, who won BergenPAC’s award for Best Actor in a Male-Identified Supporting Role for playing Javert in Les Mis last year.
As director Stephanie Rubin says, “We aren’t merely staging a classic; we are presenting a sincere tribute to the resilience of the human spirit that makes the village of Anatevka feel like home for us all.”
